All you need to know about CBD eye drops

One of the rising interests in the CBD industry is the development of CBD eye drops as a potential treatment for eye conditions like glaucoma. As a natural and safe remedy, CBD oil eye drops could help people suffering from chronic pain and discomfort; however, CBD eye drops effects may be less dependable than the effects of other CBD products.

To help you decide whether or not CBD eye drops are an option for you, let’s dive into their current scientific and medical understanding, effectiveness, and safety.

What are CBD eye drops?

CBD eye drops are simply eye drops infused with CBD. They contain the same eye-moistening ingredients as regular eye drops, as well as  the beneficial properties of CBD.

CBD is rapidly rising in popularity in both the medicinal and alternative treatment worlds, as it doesn’t have any of the psychoactive properties of its cannabis cousin, THC. CBD comes in many forms, including oil tinctures, salves, gels, gummies, and creams. But for those dealing with eye issues, CBD eye drops may be beneficial. They allow you to directly (and safely) apply CBD to your eyes—something you can’t do with other CBD products.

You use CBD eye drops the same way as regular eye drops—that is, by dropping your head back, gently pulling down your lower eyelid, holding the bottle above your eye, and squeezing it until a drop falls into the pocket of your eyelid. Like regular eye drops, CBD eyedrops add moisture to your eyes. But these ones also contain CBD, which has numerous health benefits. In addition to promoting a sense of general wellness and balance in your body, CBD has been shown to specifically help the health of your eyes. It can be used to help treat eye dryness and pain, as well as conditions such as glaucoma.

Using CBD eye drops for glaucoma and other conditions

Numerous studies have shown consuming cannabis to be beneficial for those with glaucoma. One study found that smoking marijuana lowered the intraocular pressure associated with glaucoma. Such studies are why cannabinoids can be used to help treat eye conditions.

Of course, CBD is not the same as marijuana, as it doesn’t make you high—and research into how CBD can play a role in managing eye conditions like glaucoma is less extensive. But it does have similar beneficial properties, and the effects tend to last longer. By working with CB1 and CB2 receptors, cannabinoids like CBD can help reduce pain and hyperalgesia.

There are numerous reasons for ocular pain. This area of the body is extremely sensitive due to the delicateness and importance of the eyes. The cornea has one of the most highly concentrated numbers of sensory nerve endings in your body, and in some cases, nerve damage can result in eye pain. As both an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever, some studies show that CBD can reduce inflammation and ease the discomfort of such neuropathic pain. In these cases, CBD eye drops can be a useful alternative or complementary treatment method.

CBD has numerous health benefits that can be advantageous for people with other eye conditions. It is an anti-inflammatory, which could help reduce any swelling in or around your eyes. It is also an antioxidant, which makes it particularly beneficial for skin health. If you are experiencing difficulties with damaged or broken skin around your eye, which might affect your sight, then CBD can help repair and moisturize your skin. CBD also encourages wellness and balance to your body by interacting with the endocannabinoid system to reset your natural state of homeostasis. This improves your immune system and general health, which will, in turn, help with the treatment of specific eye conditions.

It is important to note, as well, that glaucoma can trigger other issues, such as depression or anxiety. Science suggests that CBD can help manage such issues by relaxing the body and mind, often simultaneously addressing insomnia and other sleep problems. For those experiencing mental health issues due to the pain or discomfort of glaucoma or other eye conditions, CBD eye drops (and other forms of CBD) are certainly worth a try.

Things to consider before use

CBD eye drops that are distributed by licenced CBD companies adhere to strict safety regulations; however, you should always speak to your doctor before taking CBD eye drops. Although their potential health benefits are widely accepted, they are still a relatively new product in the industry and you are directly applying CBD to your eye.

It’s also important to note that the development of CBD eye drops is ongoing. One reason for this is because of the way oil and water do not naturally mix together, making it difficult to infuse an eye drop solution with CBD using CBD oil. This is one limitation on the potential effectiveness of CBD eye drops. With more research, the success rates of CBD eye drops will improve.

If you do decide to use CBD eye drops, do not exceed 40 mg in a single dose. Some research indicates that this amount in one go may be harmful to your eye. To be safe, stick to doses between 10 and 20 mg. This amount will have an effect while still being safe.

If you (or your doctor) are not comfortable with eye drops, you may want to try an alternative method of taking CBD. For example, CBD oil tinctures are widely used with excellent results. Your doctor can give more insight into the correct dose and type for you and your existing conditions.
