CBD for women's health

CBD for women's health

There are many great things about being a woman—but there are a few difficult things, too. Things like PMS, mood swings, menstrual difficulties, fertility issues, menopause… the list goes on.

You may have heard that CBD has lots of benefits for various pain conditions, anxiety, and possibly some chronic disorders. But did you know it’s also a simple and effective solution for many women’s health issues? Here’s all you need to know about CBD for women!

CBD 101

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main medicinal compounds of the cannabis plant. Research has shown that CBD can interact with the body’s own endocannabinoid receptors, which are located throughout the nervous system, immune system, and reproductive system.

Your endocannabinoid system (ECS) receives and translates signals from cannabinoids, a type of neurotransmitter. It’s your ECS system that helps to regulate normal bodily functions such as sleep, appetite, immune responses, and pain.

Your body produces its own cannabinoids, but CBD provides a kind of ‘top-up.’ The cannabinoids in CBD bind with the cannabinoid receptors in your body, resulting in a range of health benefits. Some find the pain-relieving effects are similar to taking an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Others find that CBD helps them to relax and feel calmer.

The great thing about CBD is that unlike THC (the other well-known phytocannabinoid in cannabis), CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it doesn’t make you high.

The ECS system plays a major role in regulating the hormonal pathways in the body. While more research is pending, it’s been found that there are many ways in which CBD can help with ‘women’s issues’!

CBD for PMS and hormonal imbalances

Fluctuating hormones is a fairly typical part of being female. Hormones are chemical messengers that help with various functions in the body, such as growth and reproduction.

PMS (premenstrual syndrome) occurs when wild hormonal levels lead to a host of uncomfortable symptoms in the stage between ovulation and menstruation. These symptoms can include irritability, bloating, sore breasts, low mood, and cravings.

The benefits of CBD oil for PMS are vast. CBD can help modulate this difficult time by pacifying the cannabinoid receptors, helping to relieve the discomfort of PMS. Its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects help to reduce pain and swelling, while also balancing out estrogen levels.

Feeling low or irritable is also a common symptom of PMS. Fortunately, some research has suggested that CBD be even more effective for boosting mood than many commonly prescribed antidepressants. While this research has so far only been conducted in animals, researchers believe it has important implications for improving mood in women, too.

CBD for menopause

Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life when the ovaries stop producing hormones. This typically occurs around the ages of 45 and 55. Unfortunately, it’s accompanied by a host of unpleasant symptoms, including mood swings, hot flashes, and night sweats.

Good news: there are lots of reasons to use CBD oil for menopause. As with PMS, it can be great for regulating the fluctuating levels of hormones that lead to crazy mood swings.

CBD can also act upon and regulate the activity of endocannabinoid neurons. It’s been found to help calm these neurons down and even ‘switch off’ the inflammatory response mechanisms when the endocannabinoid system gets out of balance. This can help relieve inflammation, anxiety, gut issues, pain, and more.

There’s also evidence that CBD can help with anxiety, sleep disorders, and weight gain. Research published in the British Journal of Pharmacology showed that CBD has a powerful effect on both the endocannabinoid and serotonin systems. These systems are involved with mood, memory, and appetite, among other things. By boosting endocannabinoid levels and also preventing receptors from being overstimulated, CBD helps to maintain a happier, more balanced mood!

CBD and fertility

First things first: there are very few studies regarding the impact of CBD oil on fertility. If you’re trying to get pregnant, it’s important to do as much research as possible before choosing to use it.

There is, however, a link between low fertility and insomnia. In fact, some research suggests that sleep disorders could seriously hinder both male and female fertility. CBD has been found to be helpful for managing insomnia and can improve overall sleep patterns and quality of sleep. It appears to help regulate the body’s production of stress hormones such as cortisol, which keep you in a state of alertness. For this reason, cortisol can severely disrupt normal sleep patterns, especially when it comes to falling asleep or sleeping deeply.

Mental health also plays a part in fertility levels. Studies involving both men and women have found suggested that poor mental health may be linked to decreased fertility rates. For example, there appears to be a correlation between how much stress and anxiety someone is suffering and the release of hormones that regulate ovulation in women and sperm production in men.

One of CBD’s most important benefits is in promoting a healthy mood. It helps to boost levels of ‘happy chemicals’ in the brain, particularly the neurotransmitters anandamide and adenosine. By elevating these two molecules, users feel happier for longer—and this may have a positive impact on fertility.

Of course, while CBD oil may provide a better outlook for falling pregnant, it’s important to remember that there may be a number of other factors that affect fertility.
