What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, often known simply as CBD, is one of the fastest-growing health trends. It’s a compound found in the cannabis plant that has many health benefits, including relieving pain and inflammation, helping manage anxiety and stress, and promoting better sleep.

CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating many functions including appetite, sleep, pain sensitivity, and immune system responses. This intricate system responds to the cannabinoids that are produced by thousands of receptors in your brain, central nervous system, and immune system. The ECS also produces its own cannabinoids, which are called endocannabinoids.

CBD’s phytocannabinoids interact with the ECS receptors in the body as if they were its own cannabinoids, activating the same responses that help manage and provide relief from pain, inflammation, anxiety, and more.

Top uses for CBD

Unsurprisingly, we found that one of the most common uses for CBD is for pain management and relief; about 37% of respondents noted that they use CBD products for this purpose. Other common uses include for mental wellness—that is, anxiety, stress, and depression—and for helping to reduce insomnia and improve sleep quality. Our findings correspond with a Gallup poll conducted last year, which found that 40% of CBD users in the US look to CBD products for pain relief, 20% for anxiety, and 11% for insomnia.

So, how are customers getting their CBD doses?

Of those surveyed, many say they rely on CBD cream to help soothe away aches and pains. Others rely on our capsules for an easy dose that they can take anywhere, while still others are enjoying using the classic CBD product: oil tinctures. Gummies are growing in popularity due to their enjoyable flavor and ability to be taken discreetly almost anywhere.

Key concerns in the CBD market

When you’re taking a health supplement, quality is of the utmost importance. And it seems to be top of mind with customers, with 24% of survey respondents saying they are most concerned about the quality of a CBD product.

The CBD market has boomed over the last few years, and it’s filled with products that are of an inferior quality—with some not even containing CBD at all. Our research confirms that consumers want to feel confident that they’re getting a high-quality product that is potent enough to provide relief from their health symptoms.

Customers also indicate that they’re concerned about the effectiveness of the CBD products they’re interested in. Since everyone is unique with different needs, it can be difficult to determine exactly how someone will react to a given product. As various other surveys confirm, however, most CBD users experience at least some relief from their symptoms once they find the right product and dosage for them.
