How to make CBD oil with coconut oil

No, you’re not dreaming and yes, you heard that right: it is possible to combine two of nature’s  most lucrative ingredients. We’re talking about cannabis and coconut oil. In this article, you’ll learn how to make cannabis coconut oil and find a couple great CBD coconut oil recipes. Keep reading to learn more about this oh-so-awesome, DIY natural remedy.

Is cannabis coconut oil real?

Yes, very much so. Cannabis oil started making the headlines due to the healing potential of cannabidiol (CBD). Ever since, manufacturers have experimented with novel ways to enhance the properties of cannabis oil — including bringing cannabis and coconut oil together.

There are several reasons why coconut oil has become popular as a carrier oil for cannabis. It contains a high concentration of saturated fats (more than any other oil, in fact), which have a high affinity for cannabinoids. During extraction, coconut oil can retain more cannabinoids as compared to other oils. This is why coconut oil is one of the best options for extracting cannabinoids like CBD from cannabis.

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence to back up the benefits of cannabis coconut oil. Researchers believe it may help alleviate symptoms including pain, low appetite, sleep and mood issues, skin issues, stress, low immunity, and more.

So, how can you make it yourself?

How to make cannabis coconut oil

Here, we’re going to explore how to make CBD oil with coconut oil. It’s a relatively simple process, but you’ll need some specific ingredients and materials.

What you need

  • 1 cup ground cannabis buds or trims
  • 1 cup high quality coconut oil

  • Cheesecloth
  • Grinder
  • Baking sheet
  • Aluminium foil
  • Oven
  • Slow cooker (Crockpot or similar)
  • Storage jar

How to make it

Once you’ve compiled all your materials, follow these steps to learn how to infuse coconut oil with cannabis:

  1. Preheat your oven to 220oF.
  2. Use the grinder to grind the cannabis buds and trims.
  3. Spread the ground buds and trims on a baking sheet lined with aluminium foil.
  4. Bake in your preheated oven for one hour. This uses a process called decarboxylation to activate the compounds present in cannabis.
  5. Add the coconut oil and decarboxylated cannabis to the slow cooker. Let it simmer on the low setting for about three hours.
  6. Turn the slow cooker off and let the mixture cool down until it’s warm enough to handle. Do not let it cool to room temperature, as the coconut oil will solidify .
  7. Put the mixture into cheesecloth and squeeze it through into a storage jar. Make sure that every last ounce is squeezed out.
  8. Store it in an air-tight container.

How to use cannabis coconut oil

You can absolutely take cannabis coconut oil directly by mouth, though some people prefer to add it to food or drinks to mask the taste. While it’s possible to use cannabis coconut oil topically, coconut oil-based CBD salve is better suited for external use (see next section for a complete how-to).

In terms of dosage, it’s best to start low and gradually increase the serving size until you notice improvement in your symptoms. Remember that with homemade products, it’s not possible to determine the exact dose of CBD that you’re getting. Industrial cannabis products undergo rigorous extraction processes that filter out most of the compounds — but that doesn’t happen at home. For this reason, homemade cannabis coconut oil may be more potent and may have side effects, including sleepiness. Keeping your serving size to a minimum is the best way to avoid these effects.

How to make CBD salve with coconut oil

CBD salve is ideal for local use and may help relieve muscle soreness, cramps, inflammation, and skin conditions/irritation. When used topically, CBD seeps through the skin into the affected tissues to promote relief.

You can use any kind of oil as a carrier. But since coconut oil retains more cannabinoids, it is ideal for use in CBD salves, as well.

Coconut oil in a jar

What you need

  • CBD extract (as desired)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp shea butter
  • Essential oil (optional)

  • Slow cooker (Crockpot or similar)
  • Storage jar

How to make it

To make CBD salve using coconut oil as the carrier, follow these instructions:

  1. Put the shea butter and coconut oil in a bowl and place the bowl into the slow cooker. Fill the slow cooker with water, stopping below the rim of the bowl.
  2. Turn the slow cooker on low and cook until melted.
  3. Remove the bowl from the slow cooker and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
  4. Slowly add the cannabis extract to the melted shea butter and coconut oil mixture. Stir slowly. If you prefer a scented salve, add essential oils such as lavender, tea tree, rosemary, eucalyptus, or peppermint.
  5. Pour the mixture into an airtight storage container and allow it to solidify. Once in a solid state, the salve is ready to use.

How to use coconut oil-cased CBD salve

Since it remains at a solid state at room temperature, coconut oil salves are ideal for topical applications. Apply the salve directly to the affected skin area for best results. To soothe aching muscles, apply it liberally for local relief. Take care not to rub it in completely.

Since topical CBD does not enter the bloodstream, you don’t need to worry about finding the correct dose. Apply an adequate amount of salve on your skin on an as-needed basis.

Bottom line

Though they require a bit of time and effort, making homemade CBD oils and salves with coconut oil are often easier on the wallet. Whether you’re looking to relieve pain and inflammation or improve your sleep, they can serve as ready-to-use natural remedies to support your overall health and wellness.
