CBD lip balm is a great alternative CBD product, combining the numerous benefits of lip balm and CBD oil. It’s easy to apply and discreet to carry around—and better still, you can make your own CBD lip balm at home. That makes it a cost-efficient product that can put your craft skills to use and work as a great homemade gift for friends and family.
An intro to CBD
CBD is a compound of the cannabis plant that has numerous health benefits. Unlike the most well-known cannabis compound, THC, it is not psychoactive—so you get all the benefits without the sensation of being high.
Instead, CBD is a relaxant, which allows it to calm your mind and ease tensions in your body. This is why so many people use it to help manage anxiety, depression, and insomnia. CBD is also an anti-inflammatory, making it an effective (and natural) way to ease joint pain, muscle soreness, and general discomfort in the body. Research suggests that its anti-inflammatory properties make it helpful for relieving skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and sunburn. Some CBD products can even help relieve the discomfort of acne. Furthermore, CBD is an antioxidant and can help boost general skin wellness and repair broken skin.
Due to its many health benefits, CBD products are rising in popularity. CBD comes in many forms—as external gels, lotions, and creams, as well as edibles like CBD oil, gummies, and capsules. One of the newer products to the market is CBD lip balm, which both soothes the skin externally and works as an edible by entering into the body through the mouth.
CBD lip balm: what it is and how it works
CBD lip balm is simply a lip balm that contains CBD, usually in the form of added CBD oil. Any lip balm—whether it contains CBD or not—is great for your lips, especially in the winter when it helps nourish and protect them from dryness. When your lips are chapped, they can cause discomfort or even pain. What does CBD lip balm do? It provides relief for your lips by adding moisture to damaged skin. But other CBD lip balm benefits are numerous.df
Benefits of CBD lip balm
Applying CBD lip balm to your lips allows the CBD to enter the body through the mouth. In addition to providing relief for chapped lips right away, this product can actually help prevent chapped or dry lips in the future. CBD brings a natural homeostasis (balance) to your body by working with cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system—and a balanced body is a healthy body. It encourages your immune system to stay strong and supports the regularity of your bodily processes and networks. Small problems like dry lips won’t turn into bigger issues if your body is healthy.
CBD is naturally soothing, especially to the skin as an antioxidant. It reduces redness, inflammation, pain, and swelling in damaged areas of your body. When you use a CBD lip balm, you’ll likely notice that your lips heal quicker and better—and that they may even be healthier and more resistant to drying out or cracking in the future.
DIY: a CBD lip balm recipe
Another benefit of CBD lip balm is that you can make it at home—a skill that could save you money, allow you to learn a new craft, and make fun (and useful!) gifts for friends and family. It also gives you full control over how much CBD you use and what other ingredients you want to include.
The CBD lip balm recipe below will fill about 16 average-size lip balm tubes or 8 small lip balm jars. If you want to make more or less, simply adjust the numbers while keeping the ratios the same. This recipe takes about 20 minutes from start to finish.
- 1 tablespoon of beeswax pellets
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
- 3 drops of essential oil (optional)
- 25 milligrams of CBD tincture
- Small jars or lip balm tubes
- Place the beeswax pellets and the coconut oil in a heat-safe bowl. Set over a pot of just-boiling water (or use a double boiler) until melted, stirring occasionally.
- Once melted, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Stir in the CBD oil and essential oil, if using.
- Pour the mixture into small jars or lipstick tubes.
- Allow to sit until the balm solidifies. Placing it in the fridge can speed the process up.
- Once solid, store the CBD lip balm at room temperature.
Coconut oil is a good choice for the oil to soften your lip balm, as it also has anti-inflammatory properties and amplifies the soothing abilities of CBD. But the great thing about this CBD lip balm recipe is that it’s easily adaptable. You can add more or less CBD oil, you can store the balm in jars or tubes, and you can add whichever essential oils you like best. Some ideas include peppermint, eucalyptus, or camomile—whatever suits your tastes!
