CBD or cannabidiol is a natural substance obtained from various species of cannabis plant. CBD has been hailed as an all-purpose-solution for a variety of health problems in pets, especially dogs.
No. Apart from CBD, another well-known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is known for its psychostimulant property as it can intoxicate the users. CBD lacks any such properties.
CBD is a natural cannabinoid. All mammals, including dogs, have a natural complex system called endocannabinoid system in their bodies which consists of two types of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in various locations in the body, especially the nervous system. CBD can link up with these receptors like a key fits into a lock. By interacting with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBD can positively influence a number of physiological functions of canine bodies.
It takes around 20 to 30 minutes for the effects of CBD oil to kick in. You pet may start showing signs of significant improvement after administration of 2-3 doses of CBD. Complete relief depends on the type and severity of their problems.
Unflavored CBD oil tastes like nothing which is why your dog does not give you a hard time and you can easily administer CBD oil to your pet either directly or mixed with the dog food.
CBD oil is virtually free of nasty side effects. It may cause slight nausea or drowsiness or initial administration. Both of these effects are short-lived and completely disappear in a day or two.

CBD can help your dog overcome all kinds of stress, anxiety and phobias. Administration of CBD can help calm your dog’s nerves and make it placated in such situations.
CBD can perk up your canine companion’s mood by increasing the amount of happy neurotransmitters in its brain through its effects on the endocannabinoid system.
CBD can help restore the natural balance of chemicals in brain, and thus helps the brain exert a better control over muscular activity in dogs.
CBD can quell the feeling of nausea and vomiting in dogs by interacting with the vomiting centers in brain via the endocannabinoid system.
CBD is known to indirectly interact with the brain areas that regulate eating behavior in dogs. It can also help improve digestive functions.
CBD can help boost digestive health of your dog by optimizing the gut functions. It helps kick start the metabolism by exerting a positive effect on the overall gut motility and secretion of digestive juices.
CBD can help strengthen immunity and thus keeps a variety of microbial infections at bay. Your pet can, therefore, enjoy a better, disease-free and prolonged life.
CBD helps ward off the signs and symptoms of inflammation in dogs such as swelling, redness, tenderness and pain. It can help overcome allergic reactions and various sorts of inflammatory conditions such as gut and joint inflammation.
CBD can help your dog cope with disconcerting skin problems such as allergies, eruptions, skin lesions, and rashes. The endocannabinoid system helps CBD alleviate skin inflammation and restore skin turgor and natural balance.
CBD has profound ability to help your dog’s body organize its sleep-wake cycles. The result is better sleep which leads to improved mood, better energy levels and enhanced performance during the day time.
CBD can help restore the natural balance of chemicals in the brain of your pet dog through its effects on the endocannabinoid system. It is especially beneficial for hyperactive and impulsive dogs which are prone to excessive pacing, quivering, and excessive barking etc.
By keeping the joints and the associated structures flexible and pliant, CBD can help improve joint mobility and flexibility in dogs. This is especially beneficial for senior dogs in which age related wear and tear phenomenon can restrict movements.
CBD has a holistic and homeostatic effect on your dog’s body which means that it helps create an optimal body environment so that all organs can work together in synchronization and your dog can enjoy a well-balanced life.
For optimal health benefits, it is imperative that you feed just the right dose of CBD oil to your dog the right way.
In general, the recommended dose of CBD for dogs is 0.5 – 5 mg CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. Here is an easier formula to calculate CBD dose for your dog to determine the amount of CBD your dog needs.
0.2 x [your dog’s body weight, in pounds] = mg/ml of CBD per day
One bottle of CBD oil contains 30ml or 500mg of CBD and there are 20 drops in every ml. A little bit of math tells us that since 600 drops contain 500mg of CBD, 1 drop contains 0.83 mg or roughly 1mg of CBD. Now, if your dog weighs 20 pounds and is suffering from severe anxiety, the amount of CBD it needs is 0.2 multiplied by 20 (the body weight), which amounts to 4 mg. Since 1 drop contains 1 mg, 5mg of CBD will be delivered in 4 drops. You can, therefore, administer 4 drops of CBD oil to your dog every day for optimal effects.
You can trickle the required number of drops of CBD oil down your pet’s throat directly if it cooperates enough.
The easier way to administer CBD oil to your pet is to mix the required number of drops of CBD oil with water which your dog can easily gulp down.
An even enticing way can be to drop the CBD oil on your dog’s usual food or dog treats.
Always consult the vet before giving CBD oil to your pet , especially if it has previously been diagnosed with any health condition or if your dog is on prescribed medications.
Start at a low dose and then step up gradually according to the severity of your dog’s symptoms and the response.
If your dog is responding well to a certain dose, do not give it any more CBD oil.
The CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors are located throughout the canine bodies and by acting on these receptors, CBD can influence physiological functions such as mood, sleep, appetite, immune functions etc.
