If you’ve been thinking about trying CBD, you may be a little overwhelmed by the huge range of products out there. One question many people have is whether there’s any difference between oils and capsules, or a pill vs. capsule.

Although most of us are familiar with taking supplements in capsule form, it’s hard to know CBD capsules differ from oils. Which one is better than the other? Let’s discuss the properties and benefits of CBD oil vs CBD capsules so that you can decide which suits you best.

What are CBD capsules?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main compounds present in the cannabis sativa plant. It’s a safe, non-addictive substance and its therapeutic benefits have been confirmed by scientists around the world.

CBD comprises more than a hundred phytocannabinoids, which are similar to the cannabinoids our own bodies produce. The CBD compound works by interacting with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), behaving like our own cannabinoids and encouraging our body to provide relief from pain, inflammation, anxiety, stress, and other complications. Our ECS plays an important role in regulating many of the processes that keep the body functioning every day: blood pressure, mood, energy production, immune function, glucose metabolism, appetite, pain management, and more.

Like most supplements in capsule form, CBD capsules are made using an extract from the hemp plant. This extract is then suspended in a gel capsule. The result looks like any other capsule you might take.

Properties of CBD capsules

A CBD capsule is basically a pill containing CBD oil obtained from the hemp plant. In addition to the CBD oil, however, CBD capsules also may contain a number of beneficial plant compounds such as cannabinoids, terpenes, and MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides).

CBD capsules are generally like any other capsule: an oval shape around 10–15mm in diameter. The outer shell is usually made from bovine gelatine, though some may be made from plant-based material in order to cater to vegans and vegetarians.

Manufacturers have created CBD capsules to provide a simple and convenient means of CBD dosing. CBD capsules are easy to incorporate into your daily health regime and you don’t have to worry about measuring the correct dosage. There’s also no taste, no smell, and no mess!

How to use CBD capsules

The beauty of CBD capsules is that the dosage is a no brainer—simply pop one in your mouth and swallow! The label on the packaging should tell you the concentration of CBD in each capsule, and how many capsules a day you need for your particular ailment. Be sure to read everything thoroughly.

CBD capsules vs. CBD softgels

Yes, there is a difference between CBD capsules and CBD softgels! Capsules are simply any kind of cylindrical container designed to hold a powder or liquid. Most capsules are made up of two pieces that fit together, which can be the same or contrasting colors. Capsules will typically have no taste and are easy to swallow. Their outer material is made of either gelatine or plant material and breaks down quickly in the gut.

A softgel, on the other hand, is a one-piece container made from gelatin mixed with glycerin or sorbitol. The gelatin may be vegan or bovine in origin. Most over-the-counter health products, such as fish oil or resveratrol supplements, are in softgels. They have smoother shape and contour than regular capsules and are often considered to be easier to swallow.

One of the main differences between capsules and softgels is that they are more expensive to manufacture than capsules, so they may cost more to purchase. But there are a few reasons CBD softgels are preferred over CBD capsules. Because softgels are sealed, they are more airtight than capsules and therefore have a longer shelf life. This means that softgels provide better protection for the therapeutic properties of the contents and are particularly better suited to non-water-soluble oils, such as CBD. The softgel is also better able to mask the CBD odor and taste.

Like capsules, softgels usually have a neutral flavor.

Benefits of CBD pills vs. CBD tinctures

CBD pills and CBD tinctures provide the same benefits of CBD, just in different ways. The time it takes to experience the benefits may also differ slightly.

Choosing between CBD pills and CBD tincture really comes down to personal preference. Some people find that  CBD softgels are easier on the stomach, and more convenient to swallow. The serving size is already created for you, so there’s no need for measuring. There’s also no taste involved. Best of all, you can pop a bottle of pills in your handbag or keep them on your desk for discreet dosing.

CBD tinctures, however, provide such a high concentration of CBD that the effects are delivered much more quickly. Those who need the benefits of CBD for an acute issue—such as pain or anxiety—would be better off taking a tincture. A CBD pill takes much longer to produce an effect because it must first bypass the digestive system, then the liver.

CBD tinctures can of course be combined with natural flavors, which helps them go down a little more easily. You can also tincture foods or beverages such as baked goods, tea, smoothies, and soup. Just keep in mind that the more food in the mix, the longer the CBD will take to absorb.

Think carefully about which method suits you and your lifestyle best. You may even choose to have both: CBD pills in your handbag, and CBD tincture at home. It’s entirely up to you!
