Your guide to CBD candles
Love candles? Love aromatherapy? And, more importantly, do you love using CBD? Well, get excited, because these all just came together! That’s right—the latest addition to the CBD market is CBD candles.
The benefits of CBD
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the main medicinal compounds of the cannabis plant. Research has shown that CBD interacts with your body’s own endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis—in other words, making sure everything is working properly.
CBD works by stimulating your body’s endocannabinoid receptors. These are located throughout your body, though mostly in your nervous and immune systems. When CBD binds with these receptors, it can provide powerful effects that reduce pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms. Some studies suggest that CBD can even help protect nerve cells from damage caused by inflammation or trauma.
Not surprisingly, this means that CBD is now being used all over the world as a natural remedy for various pain conditions, anxiety, and stress disorders. Unlike the other commonly known phytocannabinoid, THC, CBD oil doesn’t make you feel high.
Cannabis candles: what they are and what they do
You’re probably familiar with scented or aromatherapy candles. These kinds of candles are hugely popular for creating a certain mood or simply adding fragrance to a room. Cannabis or hemp candles are an exciting new addition to the CBD product range. As the name suggests, they’re candles infused with CBD oil and/or cannabis essential oil.
Most CBD oil candles are made with a blend of distilled oil that contains terpenes, which produces the characteristic scent and feel of cannabis. When lit, they may amplify the therapeutic effect that aromatherapy candles can have, with the added benefit of relieving stress and anxiety. Some CBD-infused candles don’t actually smell like cannabis at all, which is great for those who don’t enjoy the smell. Candles made with the cannabis essential oil are likely to smell like marijuana.
You may think that breathing in the scent of a CBD candle would get you high, but that’s not the case. Any product made with cannabis essential oil—including CBD candles—won’t contain THC, which is the component that produces the ‘high’ feeling. Cannabis essential oil is distilled from the hemp strain of the cannabis plant, which does not contain any THC. You won’t experience any mind-altering sensations when you light the wick!
Can CBD-infused candles provide symptom relief?
Because CBD has only recently been legalized in many countries, much of the scientific research into its benefits is still pending. But there have been some positive findings from the research thus far. A 2017 study found that when people breathed in the scent of CBD-infused essential oils, they experienced lowered blood pressure. The participants in the study also said that they felt calmer and had more energy after smelling the candles. And while the study was small (it included just five people!), the results certainly warrant further exploration.
There are, of course, many anecdotal reports supporting the use of CBD oil for managing pain, relieving anxiety, and promoting healthy sleep patterns. CBD appears to help reduce prostaglandin levels in the body, which makes it ideal for women suffering from menstrual pain, cramps, and inflammation. CBD is also thought to inhibit the COX-2 enzyme—the chemical that causes pain in the body. It’s for this reason that CBD is now being used as a supplement to opioids for pain treatment in many countries.
With all this in mind, there’s every reason to suggest that CBD candles might deliver some wonderful benefits. After all, cannabis is often used to help people reach a state of deep meditation and relaxation. Many religions throughout history have even used marijuana as an incense.
Make your own CBD aromatherapy candles
If you’ve made any kind of candles before, you can certainly make your own CBD candles. And even if you haven’t, there are plenty of free how-to guides on the internet. Here’s what you need to do.
- Large glass mason jar
- Hemp wick
- 1 pound soy wax
- 1 cup organic coconut oil
- 1 ounce CBD isolate
- Hot glue gun
- Oven mitts
- Double boiler
- Food thermometer
- With the glue gun, attach the wick to the bottom of the mason jar in the center. Make sure it’s long enough for you to trim the wick later on.
- Melt the soy wax and organic coconut oil in a double boiler at medium-low heat.
- Allow the wax to cool to about 120 degrees, then add the CBD oil to the mixture. Blend it together as evenly as possible.
- Slowly pour the CBD wax into the mason jar while keeping a firm grip on the wick to hold it in place—but don’t pull on it. Leave about 1 cm of space at the top of the jar.
- Sandwich the wick between two chopsticks or pencils to hold it in place while the candle sets.
- Allow the candle to cool for about 4 hours, then trim the wick down to half an inch.
And voila—you have your own CBD candle!
